Halloween Books for Kids
This list features only the Halloween books that are truly loved and enjoyed year after year in our home. None of these stories are scary, and each is fun, engaging, and perfect for little readers.
Why read Halloween books with your child?
If your family celebrates Halloween, books can add excitement and anticipation to the season! For younger children, Halloween-themed books can help them understand the traditions and activities they’ll experience, like dressing up in costumes, trick-or-treating, and carving pumpkins. As children grow, the books continue to add to the celebration, making Halloween an even more memorable and festive time in your home.
Storing seasonal books
I keep our holiday books stored away until the season arrives. With limited space, I own only a handful of favorites and rely on the library for the rest. I recommend placing library holds a couple of weeks in advance for seasonal books, especially for popular titles. While I’ve linked the titles below on Amazon for convenience, I usually check our library first, and this year I’ve only purchased used copies through ThriftBooks or eBay. If your library doesn’t have a book you’re looking for, you can submit it as a purchase suggestion, and in my experience, every book I’ve recommended so far has been added to their collection.

Halloween Favorites Book List
The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything
A classic! This story is so fun with actions and movements.
Room on the Broom
A cute and silly story about friendship with a friendly, not scary witch.
The Little Ghost Who Was A Quilt
The story of a little ghost who is a quilt instead of a sheet and goes on an adventure. With themes of self-acceptance and finding your strengths, this is truly adorable and sweet story!
To go along with this book we made a little quilt ghost puppet by gluing scraps of fabric and paper onto a piece of card stock. Then we cut it into the shape of a ghost, glued on eyes and a mouth, and taped on a popsicle stick handle.
Pick a Pumpkin
This book goes through all the steps of picking a pumpkin and carving a jack-o-lantern. It’s a perfect book to read before a trip to the pumpkin patch.
Pumpkin Jack
A sweet story about carving a pumpkin, and then it follows the life cycle of the pumpkin as it returns to the earth and the seed grow into new pumpkins the next year.
Little Boo
A story about a little pumpkin seed that can’t wait to grow up and be a scary jack-o-lantern.
Moonlight: The Halloween Cat
A simple and soothing story about what Moonlight the cat sees on Halloween night.
Sadly this is out of print, but can be found second hand on Amazon or eBay. I check this book out from my library.
Happy Halloween, Stinky Face
We love Stinky Face books in our house! Stinky Face thinks of all that silly and strange things could go wrong on Halloween, and his Mom reassures him that it will all work out. A cute and funny Halloween book!
The Biggest Pumpkin Ever
Two friends work together to grow the biggest pumpkin ever!
Mousekin’s Golden House
An absolute classic that I read as a child! I love this book so much. Mousekin finds a cozy and safe home for winter inside of a jack-o-lantern.
Sadly this is out of print. I have found that the second hand prices are very high on the eBay and Amazon. I borrow this book from my local library.
